Aviation Fuel-Handling HazCom Awareness

What your employer must give you

This course teaches how Hazard Communication applies when aviation fuel is around, how the hazards work, how to read a label and a safety data sheet, what a release looks like and where your authority stops. The fuels, the equipment, the ramp and the emergency plan belong to your employer. Make sure you can get each one before you work near fuel:

• The actual aviation fuels, additives, fuel-contaminated residues, cleaning products and related hazardous chemicals in your work area.
• The written Hazard Communication program, the chemical list, the label system and how you reach an SDS, including backup access when the system is down.
• The fuel-specific hazards you face: flammability, how vapor moves and collects, skin and eye exposure, aspiration warnings, environmental release concerns and the ignition controls that apply.
• The local procedures for fueling-adjacent work, defueling, sampling, sump draining, maintenance support, fuel-contaminated clothing, hygiene, storage and waste handling.
• The PPE selected for the actual fuel, task, exposure route, duration and material compatibility, not whatever is in the bin.
• The spill, leak, fire, exposure, alarm, evacuation and reporting procedures, and specifically where your employer draws the line between incidental action and emergency response.
• The multi-employer communication arrangements at your airport, ramp, hangar, FBO, tank farm or contractor work area, including who holds stop-work authority.
• Any separate qualification your role needs: hands-on fueling authorization, supervision, equipment training, respiratory-protection program steps, fire-extinguisher or fire-brigade requirements, spill-response training or HAZWOPER training.

If you cannot get these, stop and ask before you work near fuel. Nothing in this course authorises you to fuel or defuel an aircraft, to clean up a spill beyond an incidental one, to wear a respirator or to act as an emergency responder. Module 2 is explicit about the boundary: when a release exceeds the incidental-spill procedure, you withdraw, warn others and activate the plan, you do not handle it yourself.
