What your employer must give you
This course teaches the Hazard Communication Standard and how to read labels and safety data sheets. The chemicals, the procedures and the paperwork belong to your employer, and §1910.1200(h) requires them to provide these. Make sure you can find each one before you start covered work:
- The operations in your work area where hazardous chemicals are present.
- The location of your employer’s written hazard communication program and its list of hazardous chemicals.
- Where the safety data sheets are, and how to reach them during every work shift, including the backup route when an electronic system is down.
- The labelling system actually used in your facility, including any workplace labels or stationary-process alternatives.
- The detection methods, monitoring devices and warning signs that apply to your real chemicals and processes.
- The engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment, hygiene and storage rules chosen for your tasks.
- The spill, fire, exposure, alarm and evacuation procedures for your area, and who to notify.
- How non-routine tasks, unlabelled pipes and contractor or multi-employer work are handled at your site.
If you cannot find any of these, ask before you begin. Stopping to get the product identity and the hazard information is always the right call, guessing at an unfamiliar chemical is not.
Completion documents the general Hazard Communication and GHS component of training under 29 CFR §1910.1200(h). It is not a legal finding, a professional certification, or authorisation to perform chemical work, spill cleanup, emergency response, respirator use or hazardous-materials transport. The employer must still provide the workplace-specific information about its own chemicals, operations, written program, labels, safety data sheets, protective measures and emergency procedures before assigning covered work.
