    Welcome to Bloodborne Pathogens. This forty-five minute course explains the OSHA topics employees must understand when their work may involve occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. You will learn what bloodborne pathogens are, how exposure can happen, how universal precautions guide daily work, and where the employer's written exposure control plan fits. The course has three modules. Each module includes engagement checks and a three-question quiz. At the end, you will take a randomized final assessment and must earn at least eighty percent for a completion record. This training supports compliance documentation, but the employer must still provide site-specific procedures and the required opportunity to ask questions.

  2. 02Controls, PPE, Sharps, Labels, and Housekeeping

    Module two focuses on the controls that reduce exposure during real work: engineering controls, work-practice controls, PPE, sharps handling, laundry, regulated waste, labels, color coding, and housekeeping. The safest response is not bravado or speed. It is using the controls the employer selected for the task and stopping when the materials, container, PPE, or procedure do not match the plan.

    The final module explains what happens before and after an exposure: hepatitis B vaccination information, exposure incidents, post-exposure evaluation and follow-up, medical confidentiality, training records, annual retraining, and what this certificate does and does not prove. OSHA training is strongest when employees understand both the safety rules and the employer-specific process to use when something goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standard applies?

OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030, which covers employees with reasonably anticipated occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

How often is training required?

The standard requires training at the time of initial assignment to tasks with occupational exposure, and at least annually after that.

Is this only for healthcare staff?

No. Occupational exposure is about the task, not the industry. Medical couriers, custodial and maintenance staff, first-aid responders, tattoo and body-art workers and correctional staff can all fall within scope.

What does the employer still have to provide?

A written exposure control plan reviewed at least annually, appropriate PPE, engineering and work practice controls, the hepatitis B vaccination series offered at no cost, and post-exposure evaluation and follow-up. This course documents awareness training; it does not supply any of those.

Does an awareness course cover the employer-specific part of the training?

Not entirely. 1910.1030(g)(2) expects training to include an explanation of your own exposure control plan and how to obtain a copy, which only your organisation can deliver.
