Maritime Confined and Enclosed Space Awareness

Marine terminal and longshoring work has its own enclosed and confined space rules. They sit in 29 CFR Parts 1917 and 1918, they define the spaces differently from general industry, and they do not run on the general-industry permit system. Crews who carry the permit-space habit aboard end up waiting on paperwork that was never going to exist and skipping the checks that actually apply. A Final Exam That Cannot Be Memorised

The final assessment draws 20 questions at random from a 40-question bank, and shuffles the answer options on every attempt. The in-video checkpoints and the module quizzes shuffle their options too, so there is no answer pattern to learn and pass on to the next gang. Which Confined Space Course You Need

This is the maritime course. It is written to Parts 1917 and 1918, and the content actively teaches learners not to import the general-industry permit-space model into terminal and vessel work. It is not the 29 CFR §1910.146 permit-required confined space course, and it does not substitute for one. If the operation you are buying for is governed by §1910.146 — a plant, a tank farm, a municipal utility, a maintenance shop — buy that course instead. Part 1915 shipyard employment is also outside this course as a complete rule set; shipyard work has its own competent person and marine chemist regime, and this course does not deliver it.

What This Certificate Does and Does Not Cover

Completion documents general maritime confined and enclosed space awareness under 29 CFR Parts 1917 and 1918. It is a Certificate of Completion. It is not OSHA-issued certification, entry authorisation, atmospheric-testing qualification, respiratory clearance, hot-work qualification, machinery qualification or rescue-team qualification, and it is not general-industry §1910.146 permit-space training. The employer remains responsible for identifying the governing standard and for the vessel-, terminal-, cargo-, equipment-, role- and emergency-specific training, demonstrated proficiency and work authorisation.

Common Questions

Is this the OSHA 1910.146 permit-required confined space course?

No, and that is the point of it. This course is written to 29 CFR Parts 1917 and 1918, the marine terminal and longshoring standards. §1910.146 comes up once in the whole course, as an exclusion, because a crew that assumes the permit-space system applies aboard a vessel will look for permits, entry supervisors and attendants that the maritime rules do not set up that way. If your operation is governed by §1910.146, buy the general industry course instead.

Does this certify me to enter an enclosed space or test the atmosphere?

No. It is a Certificate of Completion documenting general awareness. Atmospheric testing under the maritime standards is done by a person the employer designates as competent, using instruments and procedures the employer supplies and verifies. Entry, respirator use, hot work, equipment operation and rescue are all employer decisions that need site, vessel, cargo and equipment specific training and demonstrated proficiency on top of this.

Does it cover shipyard work under Part 1915?

Not as a complete rule set. Part 1915 shipyard employment runs on its own competent person and marine chemist requirements, and this course does not deliver them. Module 1 covers how to tell which rule set governs the operation you have been assigned to, which is useful whichever rule set turns out to apply, but the shipyard standard itself is out of scope.

How many hours does OSHA require?

Parts 1917 and 1918 do not put an hour count on this training. They set out what has to be known and who has to be designated. This course runs about two hours of video, which is what it takes to cover the scope boundary, testing, carbon monoxide, cargo hazards, access, coordination and emergency limits without skipping any of them.

What does it say about carbon monoxide?

Module 3 covers §1918.94 carbon monoxide monitoring: when monitoring is required, the 50 ppm eight-hour area level, the applicable ceilings including the distinction that applies to Ro-Ro operations, and the decision to remove people from the space. It also covers ventilation design, where intakes get placed, how to tell whether air is actually reaching the far end of a hold, and what to do when ventilation fails while engines are still running. Your employer’s own written carbon monoxide procedure sits on top of this.

Does it cover fumigated cargo?

Yes. Module 4 covers the information you are supposed to have before anyone goes near a fumigated hold, including the carrier’s written fumigation notification and, for treated tobacco, the written aeration assurance. It also covers grain dust and combustible dust conditions, and fish holds and hydrogen sulfide, a hazard that is easy to underestimate because the smell disappears well before the danger does.

Does it cover rescue?

It covers the boundary, not the technique. Module 7 covers emergency planning before work starts, recognising an emergency, evacuation and accountability, and an explicit prohibition on improvised entry rescue. It is blunt about the one thing that turns one casualty into several: if someone is down inside a space, raise the alarm and do not go in after them. This is not a rescue team qualification, and no online course is.
